Rohingya Appeal

Tens of thousands of members of the Rohingya community have been displaced due to the worst violence ever against the persecuted minority. The violence followed an attack on a Myanmar border post by suspected militants but the ensuing military crackdown has affected the entire Rohingya community in Myanmar (Burma).

The violence has displaced in excess of 600,000 Rohingya people. In a report issued into the violence, the UN human rights wing (OHCHR) had documented mass gang-rape, killings, including that of babies and young children, brutal beatings, children forced into child labour, disappearances and other serious human rights violations by Myanmar’s security forces

To date (September 3rd) an estimated 4,000 men, women and children have been killed.

About 421,000 people have fled from Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh in less than a month, it is estimated that over 250,000 are children. Many refugees are currently stuck in No Mans Land between Burma and Bangladesh with Burmese military still attacking them. Refugees are being held by the Bangladeshi border guard after crossing the border into the country. Bangladeshi authorities have toughened patrols in a bid to prevent more arrivals in a country that already hosts well over 400,000 Rohingya refugees
