Tens of thousands of members of the Rohingya community have been displaced due to the worst violence ever against the persecuted minority. The violence followed an attack on a Myanmar border post by suspected militants but the ensuing military crackdown has affected the entire Rohingya community in Burma (Myanmar).
The violence has displaced over 168,000 people. In a report issued into the violence, the UN human rights wing (OHCHR) had documented mass gang-rape, killings, including that of babies and young children, brutal beatings, children forced into child labour, disappearances and other serious human rights violations by Myanmar’s security forces.
We have initiated an urgent response to this devastating situation and will be distributing emergency aid to victims and displaced families.
