Bagh, one of the ten districts of AJK, has a population of 350,000 and 94% live in rural areas. Children and youth estimated to be 60% of the population. Bagh District trails behind many other parts of AJK in educational indicators. Average literacy rate is 56.89 with female literacy of 40.97%. Male and female enrolment ratios are 58.19 and 45.02 respectively. The public sector is the largest provider in regards to number of schools and enrolment.

Kotera Sahlian school started in January 1996 on ‘single-class single-teacher’ basis through a small funding of PKR30,000.00. The school today has an enrolment of 307 boys and girls in kindergarten, primary and secondary grades. The present number of teachers in the school is 15.

The school is registered with the AJK Government’s Department of Education. It is helping underprivileged children have access to their fundamental right of education as enshrined in Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Dakar Framework of Action, and guaranteed through Article 25A of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The curricula at the school follow the National Curriculum Guidelines and ensure a rigorous and activity-oriented learning process suitable for all the children.

The community, children and teachers at the school have always expressed their desire for a safe and purpose-built school. In the local area there is a lack of adequate buildings to rent which are appropriate and safe for both students and teachers. In view of this, Abdullah Aid has aiming to construct a seismic-compliant and fit-for-purpose two-storey school for the benefit of the pupils and teachers.
